Description: The first-year course of Business English at Artevelde University College Ghent has been redesigned to improve student success by addressing the demotivating learning environment because of differences in performance levels between weaker and stronger students of English. These differences resulted in either a lack of motivation and confidence (weaker students) or a sense of uselessness of the course (stronger students). The redesign combines regular coaching in an individual online preparation semester followed by intensive coaching and teaching in the second semester. Students have to work autonomously and take initiative to become the true owners and composers of their own learning track. Through a motivating and language-based learning environment characterised by interaction, competences and autonomy we aim to activate students, improve the starting level of weaker students, let stronger students excel, and make the course more hands-on. This presentation will elaborate on our specific approach and illustrate this with hands-on examples.
