Self and Peer Assessment of Oral Performance“,
Ms. Sabine Schmidt, Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, Germany
Place: Room D505
Time: 10.30 – 12.00
Description: The evaluation of oral language performance is a very complex area, due largely to the fleeting nature of spoken language: accurate assessment demands detailed systematic note taking from the teacher. It is also considerably difficult for students to accurately assess their own oral performance skills and improve accordingly. These difficulties could be alleviated by the use of clear assessment sheets and a multi-stage evaluation procedure. This would be a highly valuable learning tool for the students. The point of focus for this presentation will be to consider self and peer assessment through the application of evaluation forms designed specifically for this purpose. As a consequence teachers’ rating would no longer be the cardinal point, but the emphasis would be on course participants developing the competence to realistically evaluate their strengths and deficites autonomously. Finally we could discuss the viability of integrating self and peer assessment into that of the teacher.
