Description: The stimulus for this paper is the recognition that language awareness plays a crucial role to learn a language. In most language teaching/learning contexts, especially beyond the primary level, teachers generally exploit materials which serve to the purpose of targeting fluency, accuracy, or some combination of these two, rather than the ability to think in the target language which can well be considered as the fifth skill in teaching/learning nexus.  This limited attitude which usually utilizes referential materials rather than representational materials undermines the importance of language awareness and neglects the potential of language awareness activities for having linguistically more aware students with ability to think in the target language and work freely within its language system. To this end, after having explained what is meant by representational materials and language awareness, an attempt will be made to illustrate how these materials can be exploited in genuine teaching/learning context.
