Challenges of Cooperative Learning in the ESP Classroom,
Ms. Eszter Sandor, Budapest Business School, Hungary
Place: Room B5-31
Time: 15.00 – 15.45
Description: In the Hungarian culture of learning the teacher is considered to be in authority, relieving the students from the burden of taking responsibility for their learning. While this is a comfortable situation for both teachers and students, the challenges of the 21st century call for a different approach to learning. Autonomy, self-motivation, self-direction, flexibility and team work are the skills most sought after by employers. The principles and methods of cooperative learning offer a way to teach students just these skills. The presentation will provide some insights into the work I have been doing with my cooperative groups in the Budapest Business School and the challenges and difficulties we both the teacher and the students have been facing.
